The Psychology of Marketing - Four Factors to Consider For Any Marketing Campaign

In order to design and implement successful marketing strategies, it is necessary to consider the various dynamics of marketing psychology. Without doing so, you are essentially ‘flying by the seat of your pants,’ and your luck is bound to run out sooner or later.  Understanding the underlying psychological processes that drive consumer behavior can help businesses to create more effective campaigns, leading to increased sales and brand recognition.

The Psychology of Perception

The first key aspect of consumer psychology is the concept of perception. The way in which a consumer perceives a product or brand can greatly influence their purchasing decisions. For example, if a consumer perceives a product to be of high quality, they are more likely to purchase it. On the other hand, if they perceive a product to be of low quality, they are significantly less likely to do so.

Just as we prime ourselves to look our best before going to see our in-laws, we, too, must consider the importance of presentation with our businesses, products, and brands. What messages are you sending to your consumers through your copywriting, content, and social media? How are your products packaged, and what is the overall look and feel of your business?

These are all important things to consider when developing your marketing campaign. And remember - if it’s not good enough for your mother-in-law, it’s probably not good enough for your ideal customer either.

The Psychology of Motivation

Another important aspect of consumer psychology is motivation. Consumers are motivated to purchase products or services for a variety of reasons including: emotional, social, and functional needs. Marketers can tap into these motivations by creating campaigns that appeal to consumers' emotional desires, such as the need to feel secure or the ability to connect with friends and family.

Ask yourself, what makes your target audience tick? Considering the average person sees between 6,000 - 10,000 ads in a day, you need to make sure your messaging will have a sudden and lasting impact. One of the best ways to elicit such a response is to trigger your audience’s emotion.

The Psychology of Decision-Making

When designing effective marketing strategies, we must also consider the psychology of decision-making. Consumers make purchasing decisions based on a variety of factors including: price, quality, convenience, and brand reputation. Marketers can influence these factors by offering competitive prices, highlighting the high quality of their products, and building a strong brand reputation.

Think of it this way: what makes your business different from all of your competitors? Why should Sally buy from you instead of Joe Smith down the road? In essence, it could be the equivalent of your pitch to your mother-in-law as to why you are the best person for their (beloved) adult-child. P.S. I don’t advise that you actually give your mother-in-law this (or any) pitch.

The Psychology of Memory

Finally, consumer psychology also encompasses the concept of memory. The way in which a consumer remembers a product or brand can greatly influence their purchasing decisions. Marketers can use a variety of techniques to help consumers remember their products such as: creative advertising, promotions, and packaging.

There are certain things you want to be remembered for - like that time you created a viral video showcasing your most popular product. There are other things - like that time you sang off key at karaoke night in front of your old boss - that you’d rather forget…

The Bottom Line

Understanding the psychology of marketing can help marketers to create more effective campaigns and strategies that tap into the psychological processes driving consumer behavior. By understanding consumer perceptions, motivations, decision-making, and memory, marketers can create campaigns that are more likely to be successful in capturing (and maintaining) the attention and interest of consumers.
