Five Things Every Successful Business Person Does

There’s a reason not everyone owns their own business. It’s hard. You don’t just clock in and clock out and leave work at the door when you walk in your house. Your work is your life, and probably is more than invading your home. But there’s some commonalities that successful business owners share that transform the burden that a business can be into a profitable passion worth pursuing. These are those things.

  • #1 - Do the things you don’t want to do

It’s really fun to have an idea for a business, to dream, and to feel inspired. It’s sort of like the beginning of a relationship. We can call that, then, the honeymoon phase of a business endeavor. However, at some point in your journey to becoming successful you will have to force yourself to do things you don’t want to.

Maybe you’re an introvert but you know that you need to attend some networking events on a regular basis. Or perhaps it’s bookkeeping, follow up emails, or something nagging on your to-do list. Sure, there are things that successful business owners can pay other people to do once they have the money to outsource. But even still, there will always be those few things that you really can’t (or shouldn’t) outsource that you just don’t like doing. DO THEM ANYWAYS. Because these are the moments that build success.

  • #2 - Set, track, and achieve goals

It’s romantic to think that as a business owner you can just roll out of bed in your pajamas and work on whatever task pleases you that day for whatever amount of time you desire. And that is both true and untrue.

Yes, you can choose how and when you want to get your work done. But, at the end of the day you need to get that work done. And you will be 10x more likely to do so if you set, track, and achieve measurable goals. This structure allows you to get into your work zone faster and more efficiently which, by extension, allows you to achieve more.

  • #3 - Have a Why

I don’t always want to get out of bed each day. In fact, adulting quite honestly sucks on most days. But each day I have a reason to get up so I do, and I often enjoy it more than I think I will.

Successful business owners have some deeper force or meaning that is driving them to continue to reach toward their goals. This could be to have a better work / life balance to spend more time with family or the money to buy a yacht and travel the world. Whatever the reason, it needs to be strong enough to motivate you to get out of bed even on your worst days.

  • #4 - Network

Nepotism sucks, but it also rocks at the same time. What I mean is, it sucks when you can’t get your “in” because your business was taken by a competitor with more friends than you. BUT, you can be that person too! It’s amazing at how much a simple short connection with someone can impact the entire trajectory of your business.

A wise man once said to me: “Aim for 20% of your business time to be networking related.” The more I dig into the nuances of being a business owner myself, the more I realize this to be true. Don’t make assumptions on which people you should or shouldn’t try to make connections with. Sure, there may be a “target audience” here. But don’t limit yourself with assumptions. You never know who knows someone else or who may be looking for exactly what you have to offer.

  • #5 - Don’t underestimate the power of good marketing

There’s a reason why some of the biggest companies in the world have GINORMOUS marketing budgets. It’s because it works. Networking is great, can, and should be a major part of your focus. But if you don’t also have some good branding to back up your newfound connections, your lead may amount to nothing.
